SIPTU to mark Diversity Day with launch of poster in Navan on Monday

To mark World Cultural Diversity Day (Monday, 20th May) a new poster celebrating the diverse membership of SIPTU is being launched in the Dan Shaw Centre, Navan, Co. Meath, at 7.30 p.m. The event is being co-hosted by SIPTU Meath District Committee and the migrant rights NGO, Cultur. Among those addressing the event are Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Damien English TD, SIPTU Migrant Workers Committee member, Ineta Millere, Cultur Migrant Centre joint project manager, Sinead Smith, Navan Labour councillor, Anton McCabe and SIPTU National Campaigns and Equality Organiser, Ethel Buckley.Ethel Buckley said: “The event will see the launch of a new colour ‘We are SIPTU’ poster featuring members of the union and welcoming workers from a diversity of cultural backgrounds in a range of languages.“Migrant workers are particularly open to exploitation by unscrupulous employers. Workers from all backgrounds should be aware of their rights and know that the best way to ensure they are vindicated is by joining a union.”Sinead Smith said: “Meath has a particularly diverse workforce with many migrant workers employed in local agri-food enterprises, meat processing, contract cleaning, care work and the hospitality industry. This event and poster is intended to draw attention to the need for migrant workers to have a source of reliable information on their rights and entitlements at work.”
