SIPTU members at the All-Tex Recyclers plant in Ballymena, Co. Antrim, have welcomed the announcement by management that the plant will reopen on Monday (27th October) following its closure on Thursday (23rd October). The plant closed suddenly on Thursday morning following an inspection of the premises by the Health and Safety Executive Northern Ireland. Staff were immediately sent home and the 140 workers affected were not informed when they would return to work. SIPTU Organiser, Niall McNally, said: “On Friday (24th October) morning, while attending a general meeting to discuss the plant’s closure, SIPTU members received text messages from the company to confirm that the plant would reopen on Monday. “Our members are pleased at this announcement and look forward to resuming their work on Monday. SIPTU representatives are seeking an urgent meeting with the employer to discuss the situation which led to the plant’s closure”. He added: “In the coming days, SIPTU representatives will also meet with local politicians to discuss the long-term future of the plant. Meetings have already been arranged with local representatives of the UUP, DUP, TUV and Sinn Féin”.
