SIPTU representatives are engaged in negotiations with the management of brush and houseware manufacturing firm IS Varian concerning the threat of redundancies at its plant in Walkinstown, Dublin 22.

SIPTU Organiser, Richard Elliott, said: “On 1st July, SIPTU representatives entered into a 30-day consultation period with IS Varian management on threatened redundancies at its Walkinstown facility. Management informed workers that the current premises are to be sold which results in a possibility of approximately 20 redundancies including several SIPTU members.

“The company has stated they are seeking to acquire new premises in the Dublin area but has yet to find a suitable site. It has raised the possibility that it may seek to move operations to Cork where DOSCO, a company which is part of wider business group which includes IS Varian, is located.

He added: “The news the plant was being sold came as a complete shock to our members and their families. Many workers in IS Varian have long service some of them more than 40 years. Our aim is to save the jobs of our members and sustain as much employment as possible in the company which has a history in Dublin stretching back more than 200 years to 1798.”
