SIPTU members in Tim Hastings Volkswagen Garage in Westport, County Mayo, have ended more than six weeks of strike action after agreeing a settlement with management following a recent conciliation conference at the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC). SIPTU Organiser, Ashling Dunne, said: “Our members are very pleased that a just and fair resolution has been reached in this dispute. This outcome was only achieved due to the overwhelming support the workers received from the local community in Westport and from SIPTU members across the country. The support of local politicians from Westport and the wider County Mayo area was also crucial. “A WRC conciliation conference attended by SIPTU representatives and management was held last week. The proposals for the settlement of the dispute which emerged from this meeting have now been accepted by our members and their strike action which began on the 3rd February has concluded. Our members believe this settlement amounts to a fair and just resolution of the dispute.” SIPTU Sector Organiser, Teresa Hannick, said: “Our members would like to thank the people of Westport and the surrounding area for their support over recent weeks. They would also like to extend their appreciation to the many SIPTU members who travelled from across the country to attend the rally in Westport in support of their strike action on 4th March. Members believe the support they received at this rally, from trade unionists and the general public, played a significant role in bringing the dispute to a close. “Strike actions are always difficult experiences and our members are very pleased to be able to return to their normal lives following the resolution of this dispute.”
