The announcement today (Thursday, 21st November) that the Government has agreed the terms of new leases for the continuation of mining, and its substantial extension, at Tara Mines, Co. Meath, is “good news” for the 650 workers employed there, according to SIPTU Organiser, John Regan. “In a climate of uncertainty for workers this new agreement on the leasing of mining rights with Boliden, the company which owns Tara Mines, until 2023 gives those employed there a welcomed degree of certainty,” he said.“It is also very good news for the estimated 3,000 people employed in jobs dependent on the operation of the miners and the wider community which stands to benefit from the mining of these natural resources through royalty and tax payments to the State.”John Regan added: “Boliden and Tara Mines must now begin investing in bringing into production recently discovered new ore deposits. It is our belief that funds are available to immediately commence this work.“The workers will do all they can to assist in this process. The current agreement between management and workers is in place until June 2014. This agreement has supplied significant cost savings and increased efficiency at Tara Mines. With agreement this productive relationship between the workforce and Tara Mines will be maintained into the future.”
