SIPTU members in Valentia Community Hospital received an 8.25% pay increase from 1st February, following negotiations between SIPTU representatives and the Hospital’s Board of Management.

Members in the hospital were previously classified as Section 39 workers, meaning their funding came mainly from the HSE but they were not direct public sector employees. Due to restructures under the HSE and government, the hospital now operates as a partly private facility.

As a result, they were omitted from the pay increases given to the public sector workers.

“It’s a good victory. We’re going back in now to negotiate in mid-April. We hope to secure another increase, with the possibility of an incremental scale match,” SIPTU Organiser Natasha Linehan Treacy said.

She added: “We held a lunchtime protest in November. That gave us leverage with management to sit down and negotiate. We got the increase because of the unity of our members and the density building within Valentia Community Hospital. More members means more power during negotiations like these.”
