Both SIPTU and the Musicians’ Union of Ireland (MUI) have expressed deep sadness at the passing of Dónal Lunny, one of the leading figures in Irish folk and traditional music.

MUI President and folk singer Niamh Parsons said, “Dónal was a talented musician and producer. His contribution to Irish music through his work with The Bothy Band, Planxty, Usher’s Island and Moving Hearts, as well as countless collaborations with other musicians will be studied and enjoyed for generations to come. He was a musical genius and a generous friend, always willing to share his talents when asked.”

SIPTU Deputy General Secretary Ethel Buckley said, “Over the years Dónal Lunny performed in the Union’s theatres in Liberty Hall in Dublin and Connolly Hall in Cork on many occasions, including in support of workers’ rights, international solidarity and campaigns for social justice. Those nights are cherished memories for all who were in the Halls. He will long be remembered for his beautiful compositions and arrangements that brought joy to so many in Ireland and abroad. Our sincere and deep condolences go to his family and to all of those fortunate to embrace his warm friendship.”

Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann.
