SIPTU Education Sector Organiser, Louise O’Reilly, has offered the union’s congratulations to the 56,000 students who received their Leaving Cert results today (Wednesday, 14th August). She said: “This is a very important day for the young people who have received these results and are now embarking on a new chapter of the lives, hopefully, either in further education or work. “Although colleges and universities are feeling the strain of severe cutbacks they are still fantastic places for young people to develop and learn. Despite the increased pressure which third level staff now face it does not diminish their commitment to providing excellent learning environments for students.” She added: “To those students now seeking work we wish them the best and call upon the Government to invest in our economy to ensure that opportunities are available for these young people to work in Ireland. We also encourage these young people when they do start work to join a union so they can ensure that their rights and entitlements are fully respected.”
