SIPTU representatives have commended the Union’s members across the Local Authorities Sector for their unwavering dedication to providing essential frontline services, with often extremely stretched resources, to communities during Storm Éowyn and its aftermath.

SIPTU Sector Organiser, Brendan O’Brien, said: “Across the country, our members in Local Authorities, alongside other frontline essential public services, have been working diligently to protect the public and property from the worst effects of this unprecedented weather event. This was done with resources that must be improved if we are to meet such challenges effectively in the future.

“Our members maintained public water services, roadways and public spaces, as well as erecting flood defences for vulnerable communities. Our members, the Full-time and Retained Fire Services members have implemented contingency measures to ensure this critical life-saving service continues throughout Storm Éowyn.”

He added: “As extreme weather events become more frequent and severe due to climate change, it is imperative that the Government ensures Local Authorities are properly resourced and staffed in the years ahead to meet these challenges. We are also calling on the Government to address these requirements through the ongoing strategic workforce planning process currently underway across all Local Authorities.”

“Local Authority staffing levels remain stubbornly below 2008 levels, while the demands placed upon our members continue to grow. It is essential that these dedicated workers receive the support, resources, and recognition they deserve to continue delivering vital services in increasingly challenging conditions.”
