SIPTU Services Division members have welcomed the beginning of construction on a new Tesco store in Cavan Town, following a sod-turning event in April to mark the start of the major development.

The new 35,000 sq. ft. store represents a significant multi-million euro investment in the town and is due to open in 2027. The existing Tesco Cavan store will remain open as normal throughout the construction phase, with colleagues moving to the new premises when it is completed.

Tesco currently employs more than 200 staff across its Cavan Town, Bailieborough and Virginia stores and has been part of the local community for more than 20 years. The new development is expected to support jobs during construction and create additional employment when the store opens, adding to the team of more than 60 workers already employed in the existing Cavan store.

The store will be built by Cavan-based construction firm Elliott Group and will include an expanded retail offer, including Irish food and drink products, international favourites, F&F fashion and a Tesco Mobile phone shop. It will also include energy-saving measures, customer parking and electric vehicle charging points.

SIPTU NEC member and Tesco Shop Steward Catherine Smith said: “This is a very positive development for workers, customers and the wider Cavan community. Tesco workers in Cavan have played a central role in the success of the store over many years and this investment must recognise and build on that contribution.”

She added: “The existing Tesco Cavan store is organised by SIPTU and the new store will also be organised by SIPTU. Our union will continue to ensure that workers have a strong collective voice as they move into this new workplace and as additional jobs are created.”

Construction is expected to continue through 2026, with the new store scheduled to open in 2027.
