The Labour Court has recommended compensation for two SIPTU members working at Carambola Kidz, Annacotty Business Park, Limerick, due to breaches by the company of the Organisation of Working Time Act. SIPTU Organiser, Pat McCabe, said: “The workers were not being properly informed of shift changes at the company which provides lunches to primary schools across the country. The Labour Court recommendation states that each worker should receive €350 in compensation. “The Labour Court decision in favour of our members demonstrates the value of workers being members of a trade union. These workers were only recently organised into SIPTU and have already won a victory to improve their work-life balance through their determination to vindicate their rights with the support of their union.” He added: “This decision comes in the same week as President Michael D Higgins spoke of the issues that face trade unions in the modern economy and the need to challenge practices in the workplace which unfairly impinge on workers’ ability to lead fulfilling lives. This recommendation demonstrates that the SIPTU Strategic Organising Department can organise and win for workers in the Limerick area, and elsewhere, to prevent exploitative employment practices.
