SIPTU representatives will meet with the management of the KOSTAL manufacturing plant in Abbeyfeale, County Limerick, to minimise any compulsory redundancies arising from the company’s decision to move a production line overseas.

SIPTU Organiser, Eva Mitchell, said: “The company informed the Union and workers of further details of its intention to move production of OBCs, on-board chargers, to another of its plants overseas late last year. The decision caused much unease and shock among our members, who have been loyal workers for the German-owned company.

“SIPTU representatives met with the management of the plant this week. At this meeting, we were updated on the information that the company has provided regarding the planned move. The information is still incomplete and we intend to work with the company to seek to minimise any compulsory redundancies which may result from the loss of OBC production at the plant.”

She added: “SIPTU will also be in contact with the Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment, Peter Burke, and the IDA in order to seek their engagement in the process, with the aim of protecting as many of the high-quality jobs provided by the plant as possible.

“SIPTU representatives will maintain communication with the company and our members throughout the process.”
