SIPTU train drivers in Irish Rail will commence a ballot for industrial action on Monday, 21st September, following the company’s reneging on a commitment to reward past productivity increases. The decision to ballot for industrial action was taken at a meeting of SIPTU representatives of Irish Rail train drivers in Liberty Hall this afternoon (Tuesday, 15th September).SIPTU Organiser, Paul Cullen, said: “The company’s industrial relations strategy of refusing to negotiate on the issue of past productivity for train drivers is at the centre of this dispute.“The company refused to engage in discussion on past productivity despite this being part of an agreement between trade unions and management in September 2014. It is the frustration of train drivers at this approach which has resulted in the decision to ballot for industrial action.”He added: “The ballot is scheduled to conclude on Monday, 5th October. After this, if there is a positive outcome, notice will be given to the company in relation to the type of industrial action that the drivers intend to undertake.”
