The Tara Mines Group of Unions (GOU) recommends acceptance of a Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) proposal brokered in the early hours of Wednesday 17th April.

SIPTU Sector Organiser, John Regan said: “This is a good day for members as it will be light at the end of the tunnel following what has been a testing and troubling nine months for Tara Mines workers and the surrounding communities. The document protects our members’ core terms and conditions when the mine reopens. The original redundancy package on the table from management was enhanced following union intervention and we made sure there would be no compulsory redundancies.

“We want to express our sincere appreciation to WRC Chairperson Mary Dooley for her dedication and support in facilitating these complex talks. The workers, who have faced nine difficult months on social welfare benefits, will now have the opportunity to consider the WRC’s proposals in detail.”

A ballot on the proposals commenced on the 25th April and will conclude with a ballot count on Friday 3rd May in the Dan Shaw Centre.

The Tara Mines GOU includes SIPTU, Connect and Unite trade unions.
