SIPTU Sector Organiser, John Regan, said: “The two-day conference (26th-27th March) involved worker representatives and trade union officials from the different CRH companies. The focus of the conference was to discuss the state of social dialogue within the CRH group at local and European level. The event was hosted by the European Federation of Building and Woodworkers.
 
“With regard to the operation of the European Works Council (EWC) in CRH a number of concerns were identified at the conference. These are that the EWC does not include representatives from all the countries where CRH is present. Speakers at the conference also claimed that the CRH EWC is in other respects in breach of Irish and EU law.”
 
SIPTU Organiser, David Lane, said: “CRH is a global leader in the building materials industry. It must respect EU legislation and take the appropriate steps to restore the trust of its workers. A first and important step would be to clarify the election designation process for current and future members of the CRH European Works Council.
 
“There must also be meaningful engagement on the CRH Agreement 2013 which must be adapted to be in line with existing national and European legislation.”
