Former Clerys workers protested outside the offices of the department store’s new owner, Natrium, on North Wall Quay, Dublin 1, at lunchtime today (Friday, 28th August). The workers are calling on the directors of Natrium to meet them and explain their decision to liquidate the business resulting in over 400 job losses.Former Clerys worker and SIPTU Shop Steward, Alan O’Brien, said: “It has been 11 weeks since the store was closed without notice resulting in hundreds of job losses.“Natrium has treated us appallingly while it has made millions of euros out of this deal. The sudden closure of the store caused massive distress to the workers, many of whom gave decades of service to Clerys.”He added: “All we are asking for is to be treated with a degree of respect. We want Deirdre Foley and the other people involved in Natrium to meet us face-to-face and explain their actions.”SIPTU Sector Organiser, Teresa Hannick, said: “These workers will not be giving up their campaign until the new owners of Clerys meet them and explain why they felt they could treat people so appallingly. The workers have been protesting weekly outside the registered offices of Natrium in Dublin for the last six weeks. They will be maintaining this protest and intensifying their campaign in the coming weeks.”A petition, written and online, in support of the workers' call to meet the new owners has already received over 18,000 signatures.
